Hollywood is releasing another walking movie based on the best-selling book of the same name.
With a broken marriage and a dead mother, Cheryl has lost all hope. After years of extremely destructive living, she makes a crucial decision. Without any experience or knowledge whatsoever, she decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 4,286-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the highest parts of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges that parallel the western coastline of the United States. The trail starts at the US border with Mexico, just south of Campo, California and ends at the US border with Canada on the outskirts of Manning Park, British Columbia.
Hikers who walk the entire route, which normally takes four to six months, are called Thru-hikers. It is very challenging and requires careful preparation. Of the 300 or so who embark on the trail each year, around 180 make it all the way.
Director Jean-Marc Vallée has made an emotional, timely and raw film starring a very strong Reese Witherspoon. In a subtle way, framed in beautiful images, the film shows that nature gives us the wisdom we need to know what is right and that we humans, like airplanes, may take off best against the wind.
